Andrews Government legislation that would devastate the CFA in Knox and Maroondah has hit a snag with a Parliamentary report recommending the unfit bill be withdrawn.

The Legislative Council Fire Services Bill Select Committee report handed down on Friday, also recommended the Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) be referred for investigation for interfering in an inquiry into Victoria’s fire services.

The inquiry found “the actions of DPC constitute a material obstruction of the processes Committee, including the giving of evidence”.

The report made clear Daniel Andrews had failed to properly consult emergency service organisations, staff and volunteers on its plan to split the Country Fire Authority.

The report also concludes that Presumptive Rights Compensation that would help protect firefighters, should be introduced to the Parliament as a separate bill, rather than being combined with the anti-CFA bill, as it was.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Emergency Services, Brad Battin:

The key issue is did Daniel Andrews, his office or members of his government, know or direct DPC to politically interfere with the Committee.

Victoria’s 60,000 CFA volunteers help keep lives and property safe but Daniel Andrews and his union puppet-masters are tearing this organisation apart.  On page 16 of the report, the Committee found that the Andrews Government “demonstrated substantially greater trust in the UFU” rather than its own fire services.

Comments attributable to Member for Bayswater, Heidi Victoria:

Our wonderful local CFA brigades should be focused on preparing for the fire season, not Daniel Andrews’ plans to tear our fire services apart.

Daniel Andrews is playing politics with the safety of Victorians. The Liberal Nationals will protect those who protect us.
