Bayswater MP Heidi Victoria has condemned the Andrews Labor Government for another 13.6% surge in crime in Knox in the past year, including an extraordinary 56.2% jump in drug use and possession.

The surge means crime in Knox has now risen an unprecedented 25.6% since Labor came to government in 2014. Crime fell under the Napthine Government, and is currently at record lows and falling in NSW, but Victoria is experiencing record highs.

Public crime statistics reveal that for the year ending June 2017 there were 12,126 offences reported in Knox compared to 10,674 a year ago, an increase of 1,452 more offences in just one year. There were 9,657 offences for the year ended December 2014.

In the last year, crime is up 31.8% in Boronia, 14.3% in Wantirna, 9.3% in The Basin, and 9.1% in Bayswater.

“Crime in Knox has increased 13.6% in the last year taking the total under the Andrews Labor Government to 25.6%. This isn’t a crime wave, this is a crime tsunami,” Ms Victoria said.

The rise follows a 53.2% surge in weapons offences, a 66.7% spike in blackmail, 44.3% increase in acts endangering life, a 41.9% jump in drug manufacturing, an 37.8% increase in robbery, an 22.4% increase is theft, and a 19.4% rise in drug cultivation.

“Daniel Andrews must stand up for Knox and wage a war on crime rather than his other personal wars.

“Our justice system is in crisis under Premier Andrews due to a failure to address causes of crime, weaker sentencing, bail laws and Police numbers,” Ms Victoria said.
