Bayswater MP Heidi Victoria has slammed the Andrews Labor Government for failing to include Heathmont, Bayswater and Boronia railway stations in a $60 million program to upgrade station car parking.
Ms Victoria said the three stations all had overflowing car parks, particularly Heathmont, but despite repeated requests, Labor continued to ignore them.
“Locals are struggling to get car parks if they arrive at our stations after sunrise, and are having to park on local streets clogging them up. I keep asking for upgrades, but the Government keeps ignoring our needs and showing they have no idea,” Ms Victoria said.
Back in September when asked about parking issues at Heathmont, Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allen famously said: “car parking spaces will be built at Ferntree Gully station and these will help alleviate demand at Heathmont station.”
Google Maps suggests it is a 10.2km, 24 minute drive from Heathmont to Ferntree Gully Station in the morning peak. Then the train takes another 9 minutes to get back to Heathmont.
Labor says just four of Melbourne’s 218 stations will be upgraded, one of which is Belgrave, but that will not help Heathmont, Boronia or Bayswater.
“No doubt when I next ask the Minister about parking at our stations, she will advise the residents of Heathmont to travel the 19.4km to Belgrave, 45 minutes at peak hour, to find a park. It’s just not good enough,” Ms Victoria said.
