The Andrews Labor Government’s Minister for Creative Industries only mentioned his Creative Industries portfolio in passing in the second last sentence in the 15 minutes allowed for his budget speech.

All the Minister had to say on Creative Industries was:

“There are many, many important investments, whether it be in the equality area or the creative industries area.”

That was it!

It is little wonder he didn’t want to talk about the creative industries in light of the massive blowouts in that portfolio. All three areas of his Creative industries budget are set to overspend their 2017-18 budgets, according to the 2017-18 Revised Budget. Two of those areas are set to receive substantially less in 2018-19 than they are on target to spend in 2017-18.

The portfolio has had a woeful set of outcomes in its performance measures in the time under the current Minister, leaving the community wondering how much attention the portfolio gets amongst the five the Minister carries. Creative Industries is listed last of those five portfolios on his website.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Arts and Culture, Heidi Victoria:

“The Arts (or Creative Industries portfolio) deserves more than just a part of one sentence in a 15 minute speech. It is a major economic and social driver in this state.

“You have to question whether the Minister is wearing too many hats, with five portfolios, where creative industries is usually mentioned last.

“The budget papers financial and performance measures suggest the department is not given the level of attention it requires.”
