Today before the Parliament’s Public Accounts and Estimates Committee, the Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz continued to avoid providing a date for when we can expect to see the completed review of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997 Vic and the introduction into parliament of the proposed reforms for RentFair.

The review of the Act has been ongoing since 2015 and has caused a great deal of uncertainty for those affected. Particularly in relation to the proposed imbalance of power between a landlord and tenant.

This imbalance could create unintended consequences that will negatively impact rental availability and prices, thus creating an unfair and unaffordable rental market in Victoria.

This would only add to the housing affordability issues and high cost of living all Victorians are already facing.

Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Consumer Affairs, Heidi Victoria:

“Persistent delays by Daniel Andrews continue to foster uncertainty and unfairness for families.”

“The Andrews Labor Government has continued to govern by press release with no substantial reforms to back up their media stunts.”
